A Two Day Course for Staff Responsible for Design, Construction, Operation and Maintenance of Overhead Transmission and Distribution Lines
Presented by
Dr. David Havard and Dr. Samy Krishnasamy
HAVARD ENGINEERING INC. & SAMTECH INC.
Toronto: April 18 and 19, 2011
Vancouver: October 17 & 18, 2011
COURSE DESCRIPTION
With power utilities in North America and Europe presently designing and constructing fewer new lines, the emphasis has moved towards extending the life and upgrading their existing facilities. The one technical area that is developing is the enhancement of utilities' internal communication systems, and accessing new business opportunities in the communications field, by replacement of overhead ground wires by fibre optic cored cables. The components of overhead power lines; foundations, towers, hardware, insulators, and conductors, each deteriorate with time due to different mechanisms. Power utilities need to have an understanding of the critical factors which may impact on the lives of their lines, and this course provides a comprehensive review of the state of the art in this area. Technologies to determine the condition of the overhead line components have been developed, but the information is scattered among the various literature sources, and some techniques are known only to the immediate practitioners of the methodologies.
Based on extensive practical laboratory and field experience with assessment and refurbishment of aged lines in a major North American electrical utility, the speakers bring direct hands-on knowledge of:
the tools available; the procedures for interpretation of results useful in predicting failures; the planning of systematic programs of line assessment, upgrading and refurbishment. The topics covered include the methods for assessment,
the tools available, and their strengths and limitations, as well as summaries of a number of case studies. Recent developments in wind loading of lines, and in behaviour of fibre optic cored cables are also included.
The technical material will be clearly presented, mainly through power point presentations, supported by videos, and printed power point handouts.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND
- Engineers, technologists, managers, technicians, technologists and draftspersons working in the overhead line design, construction and maintenance areas.
- Utility staff working in operations, system planning, or research areas.
- Staff from hardware manufacturers, consultants and universities will also benefit.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Upon completion of this course, the attendees will have an overall appreciation of the mechanisms involved in the deterioration of overhead power lines, and a range of approaches available to assess the condition of overhead power lines. They will be aware of alternative procedures for extending the life of lines, and for upgrading them in a realistic manner for increased power carrying capabilities.

SPEAKERS
David (Dave) Havard, Ph.D., P.Eng.
Dr. David Havard, P.Eng., president of Havard Engineering Inc., has over 40 years experience solving the mechanical and civil engineering problems of power delivery systems. His work involves analysis of problems and finding solutions related to station structures, underground cables, overhead distribution and transmission conductors, hardware, and structures.
Dr. Havard, as a Senior Research Engineer in the Mechanical Research Department of Ontario Hydro, coordinated Ontario Hydro's assessment of older transmission lines for the province-wide refurbishment and upgrading, and has spent many years working closely with design and maintenance staff to solve problems on vibration and galloping of lines.
Since establishing his own company, Dr. Havard continues to provide engineering services to utilities on control of vibration and galloping, and testing and analyses of components of transmission systems. He has also conducted workshops on design and maintenance of overhead lines. Dave is a long time active member of IEEE, CIGRÉ, and CEA, where he has served as the Technical Coordinator of the Transmission Line Asset Management Interest Group. Dr. Havard is an Adjunct Professor in the Mechanical Engineering Department of the University of Toronto and a Registered Professional Engineer in the Province of Ontario.
S.G. (Samy) Krishnasamy, Ph.D., P.Eng.
Dr. Samy Krishnasamy received B.E. and M.Sc.(Eng) from India and Ph.D. from the University of Waterloo, where he was a Research Assistant Professor.
Dr. Krishnasamy has over 30 years of experience, mostly in Ontario Hydro, in the area of transmission, distribution, stations and structures. He was the Head of the Transmission, Distribution and Structures Unit carrying out R & D work on weather related conductor loads, probability based design methods, management and life extension of wood pole lines, testing of fibre optic ground wires, conductors, line hardware, and large scale civil structures. Samy was also responsible for managing several internal and external projects which included CEA, EPRI and outside industries.
Samy is an active member of IEC TC11 WG11 on Wind and Ice Loading. He has organized several national and international seminars, symposiums and conferences. He is currently managing SAMTECH INC., a consulting company involved in solving mechanical problems of overhead lines, and pole management and life extension using non-destructive methods. Dr. Krishnasamy is a Registered Professional Engineer in the Province of Ontario and an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Civil Enginering of the University of Waterloo.
